Pop your collar, throw your Aviators on, and get ready for “Top Gun” revelry on board your own private aircraft carrier (USS Midway Museum). Woo hoo! No sooner do you board than whistling winds rustle through your hair, and it hits you—I’m about to embark on one of those I-can’t-believe-I’m-doing-this experiences.
Party on the USS Midway Museum
The USS Midway Museum is battle tested through and through. Commissioned after World War II, it was the largest ship in the world until 1955. It was also the lead ship of its class, meaning subsequent ships were constructed based on its design. Trendsetter!
For 47 long years, the USS Midway Museum plowed through both friendly and furious waters, seeing action during the Vietnam War and later operating as the flagship during Operation Desert Storm. If it could speak, it might say, “I worked for 47 years! It’s about time I retired and became a museum. Nobody press any buttons in here. Trust me.”
Sips more champagne.
You continue adventuring around the various chambers, control rooms, and aircraft (29 in total)—summoning the visions, sounds and smells of battles long fought and long past. You might want to be careful with evoking sounds and smells when you’re in the sailor’s quarters though. Just saying.
A few moments later, you make your way towards the 4-acre flight deck and spy a backdrop of the bay. Could this really be happening? It’s too mesmeric. Your breath is arrested. Your ear catches music in the air. It’s time to break out your terrible best dance moves and boogie! Look grandma! I can dance!
Champagne empty. Refill.
As you convulse dance your way across the flight deck, you wonder what it may be like to pilot one of these aircraft in battle—dizzying through the air like a thunderbolt—piercing the heavens with rapid precision. You’d zero in on your target like a rogue hawk after its prey. Fierce.
I mean, it’s just like the video games, right? I have an Xbox, I can do it!
Perhaps the best part of the experience? You’re surrounded by a community of like-minded and like-spirited folks who have convened to create one thing together: the lifelong memory of having liv’ed, once upon a day.
Liv: Your Life, Your Way
When all this dancing, adventuring, and champagning have set—along with the San Diego sun—you’ll look back on a one-of-a-kind evening and know: Day 1 of “Operation Liv Life” is complete.
